The Busch Mink MM 1104 BP O2 is a specialized, industrial-grade dry claw compressor and vacuum pump. The "BP" designation stands for overpressure/pressure variants, while the "O2" specification denotes it is configured specifically for handling oxygen-enriched gases.
1. The Rotary Claw Pumping Principle
The core of the pump consists of two claw-shaped rotors mounted on parallel shafts inside a synchronized pumping chamber.
Synchronized Counter-Rotation: The rotors turn in opposite directions. Their movement is precisely synchronized by a timing gear drive located in a separate, sealed gear housing.
Contactless Operation: As the claws rotate, they pass incredibly close to each other and the interior cylinder wall, maintaining tight tolerances measured in fractions of a millimetre. However, they never actually touch.
Internal Compression: As the claws roll past the inlet port, gas is drawn into the expanding chamber. As rotation continues, the volume between the claws is trapped, compressed mechanically by the geometric shape of the rotors, and then forced out through the discharge port.
Because there is zero friction or mechanical wear inside the pumping chamber, the pump requires no internal lubrication. This yields an entirely oil-free exhaust gas stream.
2. Engineering Architecture: The "BP" Designation
The BP (Back Pressure / Overpressure) variant modifies the internal geometry and sealing profile of the standard Mink platform.
Dual-Function Flexibility: While traditional vacuum pumps exhaust directly to atmospheric pressure, BP variants are built with heavy-duty casings and specialized shaft seals. This allows them to operate as both low-pressure compressors and high-differential vacuum pumps.
Variable Pressure Handling: They can safely discharge gas into a pressurized manifold system (up to standard rated overpressures, usually around 2.0 to 2.5 bar absolute) without suffering from seal failure or overheating.
3. Materials & Thermodynamics of the "O2" Variant
Pumping high-purity or enriched oxygen (O₂ > 21%) presents severe thermal and chemical hazards. Standard industrial pumps will trigger a catastrophic flash fire if compressed oxygen reacts with hydrocarbon lubricants or friction points. The O2 variant incorporates specific thermodynamic and chemical isolation measures: Gearbox Lubricant: PFPE (Perfluoropolyether) synthetic fluid. It is chemically inert and completely non-reactive with pure oxygen.
